About Certified Nurse Midwives

Generations Women’s Health Center (GWHC) Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) believe that every woman has the right to safe, family-centered healthcare with respect for human dignity and diverse cultures.

Our practice of nurse-midwifery is based on the following tenets:

Every woman and her family have the right to self-determination within the boundaries of safe care.

Every woman and her family have the right to be involved in the health care she receives.

Health promotion and client education are fundamental aspects of health care.

Continuity of care is important to women, and attempts should be made to provide for continuity of care whenever possible.

Childbearing is a normal, natural process, and attempts should be made to avoid unnecessary intervention.

A safe mechanism for physician consultation, collaboration, and referral is essential to the practice of nurse-midwifery.

Generations Certified Nurse Midwives are dedicated to helping you have the birth you desire, in a safe and supported manner. We are able to offer waterbirth at both St. Joseph’s and St. John’s in fully installed, dedicated tubs. (Click here for more information about waterbirth.) We are able to offer VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) at St. John’s. Our primary cesarean section rate is far lower than the national or state average, ranging from 3 – 9% in the past 5 years. Our VBAC success rate typically is in the 80% range, higher than the national average. We are happy to work with doulas and other support people you invite to your birth.

Our CNM’s also provide continuity of care by offering clinic visits for annual exams, birth control, and typical “problem visits” for women of all ages.
